The Ward: Representations and Realities, 1890-1950

The Ward: Representations and Realities, 1890-1950, March 16-April 23, curated by Paul Bishop, Daniel Panneton, and Marisa Strom

Come see our new exhibition The Ward: Representations and Realities, 1890-1950, part of the Myseum of Toronto’s Intersections Festival. This exhibition features photographs and artefacts from Toronto’s St. John’s Ward neighbourhood and explores the story of Toronto’s largest immigrant slum, and how its representations often differed with realities in the neighborhood.

This exhibition has been made possible by the Myseum of Toronto and the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto.

The exhibition runs from March 16-April 23. Entry to view the exhibition is free.

Just a reminder, Campbell House is closed Good Friday, March 25 through Easter Monday, March 28. We will return to regular hours Tuesday, March 29.

About WAR Flowers:

During the First World War, Canadian soldier George Stephen Cantlie plucked flowers from the fields and gardens of war-torn Europe and sent them home to his baby daughter Celia in Montréal.

One hundred years later, his touching ritual has provided the inspiration for this innovative multi-sensory exhibit.

WAR Flowers examines human nature in wartime through artistic representations that combine Cantlie’s letters and pressed flowers with original scents, crystal sculptures and portraits of 10 Canadians directly involved in the First World War.

Explore the roots of contemporary food culture in nineteenth century heritage foodways during a special visit to Campbell House Museum. Discover what the iconic contemporary comfort food, macaroni and cheese, reveals about evolving tastes, class and economic systems over time. Enjoy samples prepared by culinary historian and curator Liz Driver in the historic kitchen of the oldest remaining house from the original town of York. Highlighting an alternative to the evolution of slow food to fast food, Conscious Consumption participants will be introduced to models of food processing and local production that can help us understand issues of sustainability today.

Conscious Consumption is presented with the support of TD Friends of the Environment as well as the K.M. Hunter Charitable Foundation.
